If the public gets to glimpse at state-of-the-art tech like this is, then my tendency to paranoia deduces that in the sancta sanctorum of labs, in military supersecret bunkers and stuff, they certainly have something better already. Or not?
All depends by the gap between assumed technology level, which is the one we are aware of having reached, and the actual technology that exists as industrial or military secret.
It depends also from the pace R&D;D divisions can keep. Like, Nintendo.

Nintendo has set benchmarks all the way long from marketing NES, which became the new standard, to Wii.
In the same time it took for Nintendo to come up with NES, Gameboy, Supernes, SEGA, its major competitor, insisted in a frantic production of new add-ons and consoles: Mastersystem, Megadrive/Genesis, Game Gear, Mega CD, Sega 32x, and SEGA Saturn. Then Playstation made its explosive entrance, the harbinger of times to come, and SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64 followed.
Now: all over the Playstation Era, that I think will come to an end with the next generation of the Wii, Nintendo had to give in several portions of international markets, and basically focused on pampering the hard-core Nintendo fans, and more generally to a vast faithful public, attached to Nintendo characters, storylines and gameplay.

A great war of graphics and numbers has been going on between Sony and Microsoft.
In the meantime, aside but aware, Nintendo R&D presented their managers with Nintendo DS, a slightly odd double-screened portable console: when it was marketed in the US, it swarmed the whole country ceaselessly since the very first weeks on. What is striking about DS, is its creative approach to technology. Even though most games might disappoint hardcore gamers, or be markedly oriented towards kids and women, no one can help appreciating the idea behind it, the freshness of the conceptwork.

And then, at the big big Expo, all there betting on numbers and discussing anti-aliasing, all there toasting at the durable gradients of expansion of the industry, at its boom, all curious to see the presentation of Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.

And Wii?
Interesting, funny...but what a weird name. Shall people like it?
Undemanding graphics, uncomparable to the next-gen consoles.
Hmmm....

A few weeks go by, months pass, and people that I have never heard uttering a single word about videogames, come to me and ask me if I know that Nintendo console...

Wii?

How I see it, Nintendo is very conservative with resources, and invests so heavily and so appropriately in R&D, that its products set new standards every time.

The strategy behind it is open-minded too: whilst surely videogame market is expanding, there sure are far more possible users outside of that- globally speaking - niche.
because the growing market of which you read news, is simply formed by the generation that was twelve when PSX came out, plus the new one, and portions of old gamers. But it's all people that feel at ease using 5-button combos, it's star-trek like joypads.
Old people, the very young, and partially women are little inclined towards this type of learning, and get easily bored or frustrated.

Nintendo's all-in was based on realistic factors:
- However large the present market grows, it can never be larger than the cathegories of people that are presently left out of it.
- A very futuristic console which is easy and reliable will attract elements of this new potential market.
- Even hardcore, experienced gamers are soon going to be tired of consoles which are more and mroe powerful, but offer the same concept.

In addition, Wii is a landmark in history, but it shall go unacknowledged for another hundred years, because it is the first step into actual cyberculture. Like the radio or the TV, Wii is the first mass-appliance for cyberspace. It is not recognised yet as such, because of course, a few years need to pass by before goggles and gloves come to your house, but it's a matter of time.

So history-wise, Wii is a kind of one-in-a-lifetime "plus" on the managers' evaluation sheet
(like: "Success in making this company enter history" "YES")

Road Rage - Catatonia

If all you've got to do today is find peace of mind
Come round you can take a piece of mine
And if all you've got to do today is hesitate,
Come here, you can leave it late with me.
You could be taking it easy on yourself
You should be making it easy on yourself
Cause you and I know,
It's all over the front page, you give me road rage,
Racing through the best days,
It's up to you boy you're driving me crazy,
Thinking you may be losing your mind.
If all you've got to prove today is your innocence,
Calm down, you're as guilty as can be,
If all you've got to lose alludes to yesterday,
Yesterday's through, now do anything you please.
You could be taking it easy on yourself
You should be making it easy on yourself
Cause you and I know,
It's all over the front page, you give me road rage,
Racing through the best days,
It's up to you boy you're driving me crazy,
Thinking you may be losing your mind.
You're losing your mind.
You, you've been racing through the best days
You, you've been racing through the best days.
Space age, road rage, fast lane,
And if all you've got to do today is find peace of mind
Come here, you can take a piece of mine.
You could be taking it easy on yourself
You should be making it easy on yourself
Cause you and I know,
It's all over the front page, you give me road rage,
Racing through the best days,
It's up to you boy you're driving me crazy,
Thinking you may be losing your mind.
But you and I know,
We all live in the space age, coming down with road rage,
Racing through the best days
It's up to you boy you're driving me crazy,
Thinking you may be losing your mind.
It's not over, it's not over, it's not over,
It's not over, it's not over, it's not over, you and I know
We all live in the space age, you give me road rage,
Racing to the best days
It's up to you boy you're driving me crazy,
Thinking you may be losing your mind.
Losing your mind
